Hawaii County Civil Defense reported 23 new active COVID-19 cases on the Big Island today.
There are currently 12 people hospitalized for coronavirus on Hawaii Island, and there have been 1,436 cases in the county since the pandemic began.
Statewide, the Department of Health reported 118 new cases today, bringing the cumulative statewide case total to 16,205. 14,008 of those cases have been on Oahu.
Since March, 222 people in the state have died of COVID-19. Of those, 48 deaths have occurred on the Big Island.
Civil Defense advised residents that the majority of recent new cases on the Big Island are not travel-related, indicating that the spread of the virus is occurring through the community itself. The majority of active cases on the island involve West Hawaii-based patients between the ages of 1 and 40.
Because of the increasing number of cases on the island, Civil Defense stated that increased testing is being scheduled, particularly in the Kona area. However, no tests are scheduled for tomorrow.
